We assure you that we will keep anything mentioned during the consultation in the strictest of confidence. While a break up of a marriage is often disruptive to both spouses’ lives, you deserve to live without physical, mental or emotional abuse you are probably experiencing.
As a victim of domestic abuse, you may not yet be ready to consult an attorney about your plight. Nevertheless, we recommend that in the meantime, you document all of the abuse by way of police reports, medical records, and photographs. Keep a journal with dates and times and the nature of the abuse. If you have any orders of protection against your spouse, keep a record of any violations. Keep copies of children’s report cards. It is also important for you to have put away in a safe place copies of financial records, including rent receipts, utility bills, credit card statements, and bank statements. You will need these documents at court if and when you decide to speak to the attorney about your situation.
The Marzec Law Firm also recommends that you have a friend or a confidant that you can talk to about your situation, and if possible, have a ready place to spend the night in case the abuse escalates.
